According to scientific research, we can live up to 90 years in good health. According to the data of the Central Statistical Office (KSH), in Hungary, life expectancy at birth is 79.1 years for women and 74.7 years for men. The question arises: why do we lose 15 years of our lives for men and 11 years for women? What can we do to increase the number of years we spend in good health?

Five special regions of the world – the so-called Blue Zones – have an exceptionally high proportion of healthy people over the age of 100. Science has begun to investigate the reasons for this, and it has been established that the lifestyle and habits of the people living there contribute significantly to their long and healthy lives. The next question was: can these principles be applied to modern urban life? The answer is: yes! The results showed that applying the principles of the Blue Zones reduced the incidence of many diseases and improved people’s overall health.

The lifestyle of blue zones has been receiving increasing attention, especially since the four-part documentary series “Live to 100 – Secrets of the Blue Zones,” which premiered in 2023.

NEWSTART – the secrets of the blue zones

Nutrition plays a primary role in maintaining our health, determining 50-60% of our health. However, it is important to pay attention to more than just this. Residents of blue zones follow eight basic principles, which can be summarized with the acronym NEWSTART:

N – Nutrition: Implementing a nutritious, varied diet.
E – Exercise : Regular physical activity for physical and mental health.
W – Water: Drinking adequate amounts of water to stay hydrated.
S – Sunshine: Moderate sun exposure to support vitamin D production.
T – Temperance: Conscious balance in lifestyle and nutrition.
A – Air: Fresh air and proper breathing practice.
R – Rest: Ensuring adequate sleep and regeneration.
T – Trust: Cultivating positive human relationships and trust.
These principles are an integral part of the everyday lives of blue zone residents and contribute significantly to maintaining their health and quality of life.

You decide every day.

Do you prepare a nutritious meal or buy fast food? Do you wake up early and exercise, or do you stay in front of a screen until midnight? When you stand naked in front of a mirror, you see a living reflection of your habits. Don’t wait for the time to come – make the time!
